Srishti Khurana

This is a picture of me, which was clicked by my mother when I was one year old. One major reason for selecting this childhood picture is that it is very close to my heart and have beautiful memories associated with it. This is my mother’s favourite picture and is kept in a photo frame in my parent’s room. This picture was clicked on my first birthday and according to my mom this picture was clicked with great difficulty because it was a task to make me smile back then. My dad was reciting a song in order to make me smile, while my mother was trying to capture the moment. After several failed images, they finally clicked this one in which I was smiling. My mom told me that while clicking my pictures, the camera fascinated me a lot and I was trying to hold the camera, which can be seen in the shot with my hands in front trying to grab something. I was very naughty as a kid and the mischievous look on my face in the picture validates this. Whenever, I see this picture, it reminds me of my mom and that’s the reason for me to select this picture and no other.
I took a picture of myself last night after getting ready to go for dinner with few friends. I chose this picture and no other as the picture conveys the message that I am happy and content. I got dressed up and was about to leave when I remembered that I had to click a self-portrait as a part of the assignment. I clicked several pictures but particularly chose this one as this picture captured how I was feeling at that point of time. I was excited to go out, happy to meet my friends and charged up for the night and this picture shows these feelings. I feel that a smiling face always enhances the picture, as the person looks more beautiful when smiling. A smile is the best makeup a girl can wear, hence this is another reason why I selected this picture. When I see this picture, it sets my mood and gives me a good feeling about myself. It shows that I am settled and happy with my new life in Mumbai. The picture is a close shot and is clicked from the front camera of my cell phone.

I selected this picture as it most aptly shows how I would like to be 10 years from now. Firstly, I would want to be content with my personal as well as professional life. On the professional front, I see myself working and heading the creative department of a big advertising firm, whereas on the personal front, I see myself getting married and having my own family. This picture depicts a corporate woman, who is confident, fashionable, successful and optimistic. She knows how to balance her personal and professional life, which can be interpreted from her smiling face. She has achieved a certain level of success in her life and will not compromise on her career due to family obligations. I admire the woman in the picture, as she seems to be a person who is hardworking and also has a good social life, which can be depicted from her dressing style in the picture. She is beautiful, independent and a responsible woman, who knows and performs her duties well. Therefore, due to these reasons I chose this picture, I look up to the woman and would want to be like her.

I really like the childhood pic you choose because I use to get scared of the camera flash as a kid and my parents had a tough time clicking my pictures. Your picture for me evokes those memories.

I liked your self-portrait the most. But what worries me the most is the choice of image to portray a young woman who is "beautiful, independent and responsible". Do you see how the advertising industry is forcing us to look at ourselves and see ourselves in this very narrow way. My challenge to you would be to question that - can a young woman be all that while maintaining her roots and culture?
