Ex#4: Back to your Roots

Hi Buddies

After the emotionally "heavy duty" Gaza exercise, I think it would be nice to do something lighter for this week.

Inspired by an article in the TOI (I do to the party, I don't to the rituals), the exercise is about connecting to your roots.

You would need to share 3 to 5 photos of something that makes you feel nostalgic about your childhood or hometown. It could be certain place in the city that is very much like home or people of an older generation like grandparents or some object in your house or something that happens in your house.

e.g. Say for Shobha it could be a picture of her family listening to Carnatic music on a tape early in morning having idli and filter coffee. This is just an example, the atmosphere is her house might be very different from this.

If you have moved within Mumbai since childhood then you could go back to the place you grew up and take pictures. If luckily you are celebrating a festival or ocassion with your family before Sunday you could capture those moments.

Whatever you choose, remember the key is whether it makes you feel nostalgic and connects you to your root or not.

All the best. Hope to see interesting stories through pictures.

Deadline: Sunday 31st Aug 2014 6 pm

Remember!
- post ONLY photos you have taken yourself between today and Sunday 31st Aug.
- post them in the order you want us to see them. So, post the last photo first, etc.
- only your name in "post".
- your name comma roots in "labels". (eg: Brenna, Roots)

Reply to this post for any doubts/questions. Also let me know if you like the exercise or not and why.

:-) Brenna

Thanks Brenna, for taking the lead. This is a great chance for all of us to learn about our family, our community and ourselves. Take care while clicking your photographs - observe before you click. Experiment with all you have learnt in class about exposure, composition, shot size, angle, lighting, etc.

hi Brenna! the exercise is really interesting and fun. its a nice way to go back and relive our childhood memories. But being from Delhi, every memory of my childhood and even my family is there. I don't think I have anything in my Mumbai house that I can relate to my childhood and you mentioned that the pictures should be clicked in the next 2-3 days. So any other way we outstation students can do it?

there needs to be a correction. The deadline is Sunday 31st August 2014 and not 24th. Nice idea Brenna. Something thoughtful.:) -Tanmayi

@Ajay Sir, Shagun, Tanmay Thanks

@ Shagun There are places in Mumbai with a strong Punjabi influence if it gives you a feeling of Delhi. If there are time constraints, you could alternatively explore the things that remind you of your childhood instead.

@ Tanmay Thanks for noticing.. date changed

I am loving this exercise!! Can't wait to get started.

Just one question...when you say in order...so we have to tell a story again through these 3-5 photos relating to our childhood?

Arushi that addition was made by Ajay Sir. But I think if it is a story good if not the sequence should be such that it builds the mood..Brenna
