Aparna shukla

Like every other outsider, it was difficult for me to "feel" home or connect to something that reminds me of my roots. Still, I'v tried to capture things that made me remember a few sweet memories.Staying so close to the Daman beach, its impossible to not have a memory on the sand. I dont know how many weekends have I spent at the Daman jetty, just gazing at the sky. This picture is taken near the Manori beach, which had a jetty just like Daman's. It made me blissfully travel back to time.

The book store holds a very special place in my childhood memories. Every sunday morning, my father used to take me and my sister to get one archie comics ceremoniously. Sheer nostalgia!

This picture reminds me of my dad. Its a Ganpati pooja held at Dikshita's place. The way her dad's instructing everyone, the way he stands, the way the white thread (what we call, janeu in U.P) falls on his belly, the grey hair. Everything reminds me of him and the poojas held at my place.

Its an old fashioned toaster and as my father is a phenomenal cook, this picture reminds me of the time when mom used to fall sick and dad had to prepare our tiffin boxes. Beautiful memories attached to this one.

Hey,
Really beautiful pictures Aparna. I just want to know if there is a reason why you chose to keep some in B/W and some in colour. Why did you choose a close-up for the last picture? All of them evoke nostalgic feelings especially the book store picture because even I spent most of my afternoons reading.

Thankyou guys.

The reason i chose b&w for the beach and bookstore is that b&w doesn't distort that faint nostalgic feel you have of your really early memories. It actually adds on to the message Im trying to put. Colours usually tend to attract alot of attention to the photograph, adding too much drama which is not at all needed in a picture where Im actually trying to show a truer and purer side of a memory. Im not sure if I'm putting i right but the fact that colours tend to sometimes confuse the emotion that I'm trying to capture so I chose b&w.

Where as the picture where I show the resemblance to my Dad is in colour because the red is important. My dad used to wear the exact same kind and the aroma of a pooja is difficult to create without the use of colours.

Close up for the last picture because I only wanted to show a toaster, other things in that shop were vessels and all which would be unnecessary to be put in that frame.

Aparna:
The first photograph is beautifully evocative of your description of your childhood. I am not so sure about the dalit bookstore and your archie comics memory. I loved the photograph of "your father". Good use of colour. The last one did nothing for me, I guess, due to it's cold inanimate nature. But overall, you did very well to use locations and characters that weren't from your "roots". Cheers! - Ajay

Instead of asking a question, it might have benefited Aparna to have shared what you made of the use of colour and b/w and CU.
